If I cannot pay the same membership that I am in, and have more referrals than the new membership limit, referrals will be removed or they will just remain there and it's no problem?

Yes I had this problem in the past you must have the same level membership when you paid for your referrals you cannot downgrade as this will cause your referrals to be deleted
